Embrace Memories with Paper Photos and Document Scanning

Paper Photos and Document Scanning

In an age where digital memories often overshadow physical keepsakes, it’s essential to remember the value of paper photos. These tangible reminders of our past hold sentimental value that transcends time. Think about the joy of flipping through a family album filled with snapshots from cherished moments: birthdays, holidays, and everyday joys. This connection to our history is what makes paper photographs irreplaceable.

Scanning at your convenience is our number one priority at Art and Home Imaging. And no-one is more passionate about paper photos and document scanning than us.

At Art and Home Imaging, we cater to various scanning needs. Whether it’s vintage photographs from the early 20th century or recent family gatherings, we understand the unique requirements each type of image demands. For instance, older photographs may require special handling due to their delicate nature. We ensure that each image is scanned in a way that preserves its original quality and integrity.

We believe that preserving your memories through paper photo digitisation is essential, which is why we take great care in our scanning process.

In addition to preserving memories, digitizing paper images allows for easier sharing with family and friends. Imagine being able to send a digital copy of a beloved childhood snapshot to a family member who lives across the country in just seconds. This accessibility is a significant advantage of our scanning services. Moreover, having a digital archive of your photos protects against loss due to damage or natural disasters.

Why Choose Paper Photos and Document Scanning?

Our expertise in handling paper photographs ensures that each image is treated with the utmost respect and care during the scanning process.

Choosing to digitize your paper photos and documents is not just about technology; it’s about preserving legacies. Each photo tells a story, and through our careful scanning process, we enable you to keep those stories alive for future generations. Additionally, digital files can be organized, tagged, and stored in the cloud, making retrieval effortless.

For this type of scanning we use a dedicated Epson FastFoto FF-680W scanner with automatic document feeder (see photo below). As it is a dedicated photo scanner, it is designed to scan a wide variety of photos without putting your precious images at risk of double feeds, tearing, shredding etc. For maximum safety, delicate photos are placed in a protective carrier sheet for scanning to avoid damage. The same scanner copes equally well with documents, scanning A4 at 45 sheets/min (at 300ppi). A carrier sheet is again used for delicate documents. The rate for paper photos is approximately 1 photo/second (300ppi). For peace of mind, we carry a flatbed scanner, the Epson Perfection V37 should the customer not wish for photos to go through an ADF.

For those interested in the technical specifications, the Epson FastFoto FF-680W boasts impressive capabilities. With Wi-Fi connectivity, users can easily transfer their scanned images to devices without the hassle of cords. This feature allows for a seamless workflow, which is crucial in a fast-paced environment.

Scanning schedule

Our scanning schedule is flexible, accommodating your needs. We understand that scanning can be an overwhelming task, especially for those with extensive collections of paper images. That’s why we offer consultations to discuss your specific requirements and tailor our services accordingly. Our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible while delivering high-quality results.

We use Epson scanning software, Epson FastFoto for scanning photos together with a custom profile for very high quality reproduction. For documents we use Epson SmartScan.

The software we use enhances the scanning experience, providing options for color correction and image enhancement. This means that we not only digitize your photographs but also improve their appearance, reviving colors that may have faded over time. This added value ensures that your memories look as vibrant as they did when captured.

For most photos, the pictures are sorted into batches and then further sorted into 5 x 7 or 4 x 6 photos. Scanning per size keeps the images regular. As each photo is scanned, the reverse side of the image may be simultaneously scanned if there are notes or text used to identify the image. The digital files will have the suffix _a in the filename while the accompanying text on the reverse side will be denoted by a suffix _b in the filename. We generally create files in TIFF format for non-lossy compression and once the profile has been applied and edits completed, then we may convert back to JPEG depending on the wishes and purposes of the customer. Also, the customer may decided whether we scan at 300ppi or 600ppi.

By sorting photographs into batches based on size, we streamline the scanning process, which ultimately saves time and maintains consistency. This organization is essential for large collections where images might vary in size and condition. Each scanned image is carefully labeled to make future retrieval easy and efficient.

We ask the customer to remove staples, paperclips etc. from the photographs prior to scanning and separate any photos that may have become stuck together. We will accommodate any images that are badly stuck and that would be damaged through separation, by scanning using a carrier sheet. Please note that we do not reproduce images that have a copyright notice on the reverse, to protect the imtellectual property of the photographer.

For documents not requiring enlargement, we normally scan at 200ppi but we can scan at 300ppi or even 600ppi.

For documents, our approach is equally meticulous. Knowing that many of these hold historical or sentimental value, we offer tailored services to meet individual needs. Whether it’s an important certificate or a cherished letter, we understand how to treat each document with the respect it deserves.
